What Is Psychological Testing?

Psychological testing is a formal evaluation conducted by a licensed psychologist to understand how you or your child thinks, learns, feels, and behaves. It goes beyond a standard therapy session - testing uses standardized instruments, clinical interviews, and validated questionnaires to measure cognitive ability, emotional functioning, attention, memory, processing speed, and more.

The result is a detailed report with clear diagnoses and specific treatment recommendations. Many families pursue testing when they need answers that a regular therapy session cannot provide.

Common Reasons for Testing

Psychological testing can help answer a wide range of clinical questions. Common reasons families and individuals seek evaluation include ADHD assessment for children or adults, autism spectrum disorder evaluation, learning disability identification, giftedness assessment, behavioral and emotional evaluation, cognitive and memory concerns, school accommodation documentation (IEP and 504 plans), and clarifying a diagnosis when symptoms overlap.

Testing is especially helpful when symptoms are complex or when previous treatment has not been effective. A thorough evaluation can identify what is really going on and point toward the right next steps.

What the Evaluation Involves

A typical psychological evaluation includes several components spread across multiple sessions. Your psychologist will conduct a clinical interview to understand your history and concerns, administer standardized cognitive and psychological tests, collect behavioral rating scales from parents, teachers, or other relevant sources, review relevant records such as school reports or prior evaluations, score and interpret all test data, and meet with you for a feedback session to review findings and recommendations.

The full process typically takes one to three weeks from start to finish. You will receive a written report with diagnoses, test results, and specific recommendations for treatment, school accommodations, or further evaluation.

Our Psychologists

Psychological testing at Lean Medical is conducted by licensed psychologists who hold doctoral degrees (PhD or PsyD) and are trained in assessment and evaluation. Test administration may be performed by trained psychometrists under the psychologist's direct supervision.

All testing psychologists are credentialed with Cigna and Aetna through Lean Medical.

After the Evaluation

A diagnosis is just the starting point. Your psychologist's report includes specific treatment recommendations tailored to the findings. Depending on the results, next steps may include starting individual therapy or family therapy, beginning ABA therapy for an autism diagnosis, consulting with a psychiatrist about medication, requesting school accommodations based on the evaluation, or sharing the report with your pediatrician or other providers.

We can help coordinate next steps within the Lean Medical network so you do not have to start from scratch with a new provider.

Insurance Coverage for Psychological Testing

Most Cigna and Aetna plans cover psychological testing when it is clinically indicated. Your psychologist must determine that testing is necessary to clarify a diagnosis or guide treatment.

Some plans may require prior authorization for testing. We verify your benefits and handle any authorization requirements before scheduling so you know what to expect.
