Family Therapy in California
Looking for family counseling covered by insurance? Lean Medical connects you with licensed family therapists in California who specialize in helping families communicate, resolve conflict, and support each other through difficult times. We accept Cigna and Aetna, and offer both telehealth and in person sessions.
What Is Family Therapy?
Family therapy is a form of counseling where multiple family members work with a licensed therapist to improve how they relate to each other. Rather than focusing on one person, family therapy looks at the patterns and dynamics that shape the whole family - how you communicate, how conflict plays out, and how change in one person affects everyone else.
Sessions may include parents and children, siblings, or other family combinations depending on what the therapist recommends. The goal is not to assign blame but to help the family function better together.
When Family Therapy Can Help
Families come to therapy for many different reasons. Common situations where family therapy is helpful include communication breakdowns between parents and children, parenting disagreements or co-parenting conflict, supporting a child who is struggling with behavioral or emotional challenges, adjusting to a major life change such as divorce, relocation, or a new diagnosis, blended family dynamics, sibling conflict, grief and loss that is affecting the whole family, and supporting a family member who is in individual therapy or ABA therapy.
If things feel stuck at home and regular conversations are not getting anywhere, family therapy gives you a structured space to work through it with professional support.
Our Family Therapists
Family therapy at Lean Medical is provided by licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs), licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs), licensed psychologists, and licensed professional clinical counselors (LPCCs). Many of our clinicians specialize in family systems work and have experience with pediatric behavioral health.
All family therapists are credentialed with Cigna and Aetna through Lean Medical.
How Telehealth Family Therapy Works
All family therapy sessions at Lean Medical are conducted via secure video. Family members can join from the same room on a shared device, or each member can join from their own device in different locations. This flexibility is especially helpful for families navigating separation, co-parenting across households, or scheduling challenges.
Telehealth family therapy is covered by Cigna and Aetna just like in-person visits.

Attend your first session via telehealth. Your therapist will get to know your family, understand the challenges you are facing, and begin working on a plan together.
Family Therapy Alongside Other Services
Family therapy often works best when combined with other services. If your child is in individual therapy, family sessions can help reinforce what they are working on. If your child has been diagnosed through psychological testing, family therapy can help everyone adjust. If a family member is seeing a psychiatrist, family therapy can support the whole household during treatment changes.
When your providers are within the Lean Medical network, they can coordinate care directly so everyone is on the same page.
Insurance We Accept
