Telehealth Therapy in California

All Lean Medical appointments are delivered via secure video across California. See a California-licensed therapist, psychiatrist, or psychologist from anywhere in the state. Covered by Cigna and Aetna at the same level as in-person visits.

What Telehealth Therapy Actually Is

Telehealth therapy is a full clinical session conducted over secure video. You meet with your licensed clinician at a scheduled time, from wherever you are, using a laptop, tablet, or phone. The session looks and works very much like an in-office visit - the only difference is that you are not physically in the same room.

Telehealth is not a chat app or an on-demand text service. It is a full clinical relationship with a named, licensed clinician who follows the same standards of care as any in-person practice.

Why Telehealth Works for Behavioral Health

Decades of research show that telehealth produces outcomes comparable to in-person care for depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance use, and many other common conditions. For some patients, telehealth is actually more effective because it removes the barriers of commute time, transportation, childcare, and the stigma some people feel about walking into a clinic.

California has a particularly wide reach for telehealth because of provider shortages in many areas. Telehealth gives you access to clinicians across the state rather than only those near your home or office.

What Lean Medical Offers Over Telehealth

All of our services are available via telehealth: individual therapy, family therapy, psychiatry and medication management, psychological testing (for components that can be delivered remotely), and EMDR for trauma.

Some components of psychological testing and certain types of ABA therapy are best delivered in person. Your clinician will tell you upfront if any part of your care needs to be in-person.

Insurance Coverage for Telehealth in California

California law requires commercial health plans to cover telehealth visits at the same level as in-person visits. That means your copay, coinsurance, and deductible apply the same way whether you see your clinician in person or via video.

Lean Medical clinicians are in-network with Cigna and Aetna. We verify your benefits before your first appointment.

What You Need for a Telehealth Session

A phone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone, and a stable internet connection. Your clinician will send you a secure link before your first appointment - no software to install in most cases.

You should also choose a private space where you can speak freely. Some patients use a car, a bedroom, or a quiet office. If you cannot find a private space, your clinician can suggest strategies (like using headphones) or help you find a time that works.

Privacy and HIPAA

All Lean Medical telehealth sessions run through HIPAA-compliant, encrypted video. Sessions are not recorded unless you and your clinician have agreed on it for specific clinical reasons. Your chart, notes, and communications are protected under the same privacy rules as any in-person visit.
